REGISTRATION POLICIES
Most classes have limited enrollment and may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met one week prior to the start of the session.
DISCOUNTS: If two or more family members register for a class or workshop you may deduct 10% from total tuition fee.
REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: If a class is canceled, you may transfer to another class or request a full refund. Refund checks take 2-4 weeks to process. If you paid by credit card, your account will be credited. If you withdraw up to 7 days prior to the first class, you will receive a refund less a $10 service charge. If you withdraw up to 3 days prior to the first class, you will receive a credit, not a refund (less a $15 service charge). Credits will be valid for 1 year. There will be a $20 charge for returned checks. No refunds or credits will be given after the 2nd week of class.

FLOW YOGA
Monday Feb 13 - April 2, 6:30-8pm

Class includes an opening meditation; a complete, flowing yoga session with sun salutations, standing poses, heart-opening through back-bending, inversions, forward bends and savasana (a deep, long final relaxation). Instructor Tracey Forest is a CYT at the 200-hour level in Prana Vinyasa Yoga, having studied with visionary teacher Shiva Rea. Prana Flow is a full spectrum approach to embodying the flow of yoga. With six years of teaching experience, Tracey teaches at The Yoga Place, Breathing Room Yoga, the Ross Barn in Manchester and Spirit Hollow. She is also co-founding Director of Spirit Hollow, a non-profit nature retreat dedicated to the transformation of consciousness in Shaftsbury.

Oil Painting
Tuesdays Feb 14 - April 3, 6:30-8:30pm

This class will use still life objects to explore the many different aspects of painting with oils. Students will be encouraged to bring their own choice of objects to paint, objects that have personal meaning to them. We will discuss composition and lighting, as well as technical aspects of painting such as making the preliminary drawing, the palette, mixing color and developing the painting. The class is appropriate for both beginners and advanced students. Teaching will be mainly one-on-one and with all students working at their own pace. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

POTTERY & CLAY SCULPTURE
Wednesdays Feb 15 - April 4, 6:30-8:30pm

Learn the art of making pottery while explore clay sculpture. This class will start with demonstrations of wheel throwing, hand building techniques and slab roller. Experience the wide range clay has or focus on a project you have in mind, functional or non functional. All levels will benefit from this class whether a beginner, casual novice, or more advanced student.

DRUMMING WITH OTHA
Thursday Feb 16 - April 5, 6:30-8pm

HAND DRUMMING CLASSES at the VAE: Come to experience the joy of community rhythmic exploration and music making in a playful and easy class setting. Using African hand drums and percussion instruments we will learn traditional rhythmic songs from various cultures of the world. Additionally we will learn how to support others both in ensembles and in rhythmic fun.

FREE Teen Open Studio
Held from 3 to 5 pm every Tuesday during school year
Encourages teenagers ages 13+ to explore art: working with paint, pastel, wood, plaster, cement, fabric inks, mixed media, and more or incorporate writing, poetry, and drumming into their work.
VAE staff artists, supervise the group, offering guidance in various projects and mediums. Teenagers can drop in, and are encouraged to try new things, experiment, and develop art skills while working individually or in collaborations. Teens can work on school related projects or develop portfolios for admission to college or art school, and can "BYOM" (Bring Your Own Music). VAE artists will be available for consultation, advice, and technical support - and guest artist-volunteers are welcome to visit, (please call ahead).

Drawing & Painting for the Absolutely Terrified
Tuesdays Oct 25-Dec 13, 6:30-8:30pm

A drawing is simply a minor manipulation of materials. Keeping that in mind, in this class we will seek to engage our senses in new ways using a variety of materials and exercises designed to train the eye, hand and imagination to work together. Drawing from observation requires learning to see in particular ways. Students will learn basic perceptual skills needed for drawing what you see by working from still life objects. This class is an introduction to drawing for adults wanting to record and interpret reality. Other projects may include drawing imagery derived from personal imaginative sources, photographs or poetic imagery.

Drumming
Wednesdays Oct 26-Dec 7, 6:30-8:30pm
With Artist-Instructors, Souleymane Badolo & Adrien DeMones
Tuition is $85/7 wks, $15/class drop-in
Drumming sessions will begin with an introduction to the different sounds of the Djembe and Djum-Djums. We will then explore a series of rhythms, including Mandiana, Warba, DodoGo, Liwag, and Salou, all native to Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa. As we practice these rhythms, we will incorporate movement to better understand them. Souleymane has taught dance, percussion, and tam-tam for many years. He is currently working on his Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in dance at Bennington College.

Pre School Art Camp

Our theme for this year is The beach, so grab your towels, bathing suit and flip flops because we are ready to kick-off summer! Your child will have the opportunity to participate in group play and allow their imaginations to roam freely while connecting/forming friendships with other campers. Our art and craft related projects will include; ocean in a bottle, hula skirt, stained glass sea creatures, rainbow fish and others. Please pack a moderate and healthy lunch and snacks for your child each day and allow them to bring along two or three of their favorite storybooks as reading will be an integral part of our camp experience. Weather permitting, we will spend a lot of time outside on nature walks to the park, having picnics and cooling off in the river. Your child will need a bathing suit/trunk, towel (perhaps a change of clothes) and shoes they can wear out into the water. Also, sufficient sunscreen and insect spray. Please do not dress your child in their 'Sunday best' as this can become easily soiled during the days activities.

Open Studio-Clay Combo

This summer we combine two GREAT camps and two GREAT artist-instructors for one GREAT week of art making and fun! The days will be split in the Clay Studio downstairs and in the Big Studio up. Several 2-D and 3-D mediums - such as soapstone, plaster, woodworking, printmaking, jewelry, collage, drawing and painting ó and recycled material will explored in Open Studio along with learning how to build, and construct with studio equipment and tools. The VAE nature trails and outdoor studios will also be utilized. Campers will learn a variety of skills and techniques of working with clay and building on the skills they have. We'll work on the potter's wheel, and hand build, to make functional and sculptural ceramic projects.

Morning Clay Camp
July 18-22 half day 10:00-12:00 pm

Learn about one of the most fun mediums VAE offers. A great introduction to the world of creating with your hands and making things to give, use and enjoy forever! Learn easy techniques to build, sculpt and make ceramic work that is sculptural and functional.

Afternoon Clay Camp
July 18-22 half day 1:00-3:00 pm
Ages 9-adult
Tuition $120 (includes materials & firing)

Budding potters learn a variety of skills and techniques on the potter's wheel, as well as hand building, to make functional and sculptural ceramic projects. Glazing techniques and slab roller use will be taught. Beginners to intermediate students welcomed.

Animation 101
July 18-22 10:00-4:00 pm
Ages 8-adult
Tuition $120 (includes all materials & final DVD)
Instructors/Film Makers Michelle & Jay Cavallaro
In this class, we'll produce a short film of our animations and of our process. We'll explore a wide range of stop motion and animation techniques and learn the basics of clay animation, including transformations (morphing one shape into another), armatures (the structures underneath the clay), walk cycles (the mechanics of making an animated character walk) and lip-syncing (matching lip movements with voice). We'll also learn the basics of paper cut-out and silhouette animation, stop motion time-lapse photography and we can't leave out classic, line drawn animation. Students will then choose to create either their own individual animations or work as part of a group. During the week students will help to document our process with video cameras and will include elements of footage in the final DVD. Students will have access to a virtual (online) animation classroom filled with great animation tips and videos before the class begins. The class will have a web gallery on www.affinityeducation.com and a blog. The class will celebrate with a public viewing for friends and family with popcorn!

Teen Clay Camp

Teens take over the VAE Clay Studio and unleash their creativity to create expressive ceramic sculptures and functional work using VAE's six potter's wheels, the slab roller and other tools. The skills and techniques of working with clay will be taught depending what level the student is at. Glazing techniques will be also be learned. BYOM (Bring your own music).

Fashion Week
August 1-5 10:00-4:00 pm
Ages 9-teen

Enter the world of fashion this week from the drawing stage to creating awesome accessories and clothing. The artists will design their own outfits, jewelry, belts, hats, scarves and outerwear from silk and velvet to duct tape. T-Shirt modification and altering your clothing will be explored. Being creative and using the imagination will be a focus while learning how to operate a sewing machine and how to adorn fabric. A local field trip will be taken in the Art Bus to gather materials and visit a factory that relies totally on the fashion world. The camp will culminate in a Fashion Show at the end of the week, complete with music, runway and featuring the work created.

Water Arts Camp

Explore the Paran Creek and create sculptures and other works of art with its currents, pools and rocks. Using the natural outdoor studio we'll create along the VAE Art Trails that wind north up alongside the creek building shelters and sculptures in the trees and rocks. Environmental artists like Andy Goldsworthy will be studied as well as trips to the local Sculpture Park. Cool off with us this week in one of VAE's favorite weeks (Camper's choice). Bring your bathing suits and water shoes.

In this class we'll produce a series of short films while learning the basics of filmmaking including pre-production elements- producing, scriptwriting, and story boarding. We'll watch several short films and talk about their techniques. Everyone will have the opportunity to explore those aspects of filmmaking that they're most passionate about.
